One of the Project's objectives is to provide input to the various standards bodies resulting from testing within the Project and during the interoperability events. It is possible that testing will raise ambiguities or errors in the base specifications. These must be reported to the standards bodies for correction.
The standards bodies involved are the following: the 3G Partnership Project, ETSI, the OSA/PARLAY/JAIN standards groups and the IETF for SIP RFCs. Less likely but still possible are the ITU-T, ISO, the IETF for non-SIP RFCS, and IEEE.
A problem with a standard can be identified either during integration of testbed components or upon execution of a test case. The reason for a failed test case must be identified, if possible. Specification-related failures include improper interpretation, ambiguous language, absences of required features, or inconsistencies and contradictions leading to livelocks or deadlocks. The partners may also identify areas where standards are missing or incomplete.
By definition, all mandatory 3G standards are involved in Phases 1 and 2. Thus, reports and change requests could be issued in any category. However, we anticipate that OSA/PARLAY/JAIN interface and SIP standards will be focal point because of their youth and the emphasis placed upon these interfaces.
Members of the project are actively involved in a number of the key bodies and will take the responsibility for submitting and championing the results within key activities within these bodies.
The April 2003 OSA/PARLAY interoperability event at ETSI headquarters in Sophia-Antipolis was a success in both numbers of attendees and the results. Several ambiguities in the OSA/PARLAY standards surfaced and one correction has been forwarded to the appropriate technical bodies.
